The Arabian Nights was written in 2009 by Tony Award winning director and playwright Mary Zimmerman. She based her play on a collection of tales known as One Thousand and One Nights, which was compiled over many centuries and traced to ancient Arabian, Persian, Indian and Egyptian folklore.
The 21 cast members are on stage throughout the play as characters (nearly 80) in the stories, musicians, dancers, and chorus or as audience members. The action is continuous; scenes and locations overlap and dissolve into one another with no more indication than an actor turning in a new direction or perhaps a slight shift in the light, a new sound or a bit of music.
The story takes place in ancient Bagdad where King Shahryar is betrayed by his wife and vows to take vengeance on all women. So he takes a new bride each day and kills them on their wedding night. When he chooses Scheherazade as his bride, she tells him a story, and the king becomes so enthralled he wants her to continue the story the next night – thus postponing her death. After 1001 nights the king’s heart has softened and he falls in love with Scheherazade. The play is full of stories – many of them stories within stories – but the story line is the effect of these tales on Shahryar. This play offers a wonderful blend of the lesser known tales from Arabian Nights with the reoccurring theme of how the magic of storytelling holds the power to change people
Directed by David Bailey, Jen Richter and student directors Olivia Steinfeld, Sam Houlihan and Neerja Patel The Arabian Nights is part of the First Light Theatre Project. First Light was founded in 2006 to provide a professional environment for young people to receive training and experience as theatre artists, directors, designers and technicians.
